PathCheck stepping into its next phase

For many of us at PathCheck Foundation, this moment feels like turning a corner on a long road, one that is we began not simply to build technology, but to deepen trust, to make systems more humane, and to reshape how complex challenges get solved in a world that is increasingly interconnected.

When PathCheck was born, it was born of urgency. In the early days of the COVID‑19 pandemic, the world needed tools that could help communities sense risks, track patterns, and make life‑saving decisions, without sacrificing privacy or dignity. You can still see that origin in our early work on contact tracing and service information systems that showed how data could help without exploiting the people behind it.

But our early success was not simply about technology. It was about understanding something deeper: a society’s most serious challenges do not show up as isolated events, they ripple through networks of people, infrastructure, information, and choices. Whether disease, homelessness, or climate stress, the underlying patterns look shockingly similar. That insight has guided us ever since.

As we have grown, from those first prototypes and pilots to the programs and partnerships we are now building, you have probably heard us talk about privacy first, ethical AI, and data systems that serve real needs. That language matters to us not because it is trendy, but because it reflects a conviction: that trust is a precondition for impact. Without it, data becomes suspicion, systems become barriers, and communities are left behind.

One important change you will notice in what we talk about today is that we have intentionally moved away from framing ourselves as an open source organization. This is not a rejection of openness as a value, far from it, but a recognition that our mission now calls for a different mix of stewardship, sustainability, and partnership. We are investing deeply in privacy‑first AI solutions that can scale responsibly, with clear governance practices and long‑term support models that help communities adopt and benefit from our tools for years to come.

So what does that next phase actually look like?

In housing and social services, we are excited about the OPAL project, a platform designed to transform how shelter access and service coordination works at a human scale. Rather than forcing people to navigate confusing manual processes or outdated systems, OPAL lets individuals reserve shelter spaces with dignity and gives staff intuitive tools to manage capacity and needs in real time. Our earlier works have shown how dignity and efficiency can go hand in hand, and the progress we have made here is a great example of what comes next when design meets community insight.

More broadly, we are sharpening our focus into four key areas that reflect both urgency and opportunity:

  • Health and community wellbeing: Helping communities understand access gaps and care challenges. Supporting healthier communities through insights and technology that address preventative medicine, public health, diagnostics, and the logistics and distribution of care and medical resources.

  • Gender equality: Using AI and machine learning to identify where disparities exist and developing technological solutions that help reduce those gaps and support more equitable outcomes.

  • Climate and environmental resilience: Applying network science and data intelligence to better understand how both natural and human built systems respond to environmental pressures, helping communities adapt and manage resources more effectively.

  • Education: Expanding equitable access to learning across rural and urban communities by using technology and AI to support career development, lifelong learning for both young people and adults, and improvements in how knowledge is delivered and shared.

These areas are not siloed; they are interconnected. They are chosen because they reflect the real, lived experiences of people who are too often left invisible to decision makers. When we design technology for these spaces, we start with the system, the network, and then ask: What would it take to make this system more just, more intelligible, and more responsive to real human needs?

Looking ahead, we are also thinking about how to grow impact without losing the essence of who we are. Long‑term partnerships, community co‑design, responsible sustainability models, and a commitment to grounded, evidence‑based practice, these are the patterns guiding us.

We are not chasing the latest buzzwords. We are focused on clarity, building tools that help people make better decisions; systems that reveal not just data but meaningful insight; and partnerships that honor local needs and wisdom.

This is our next phase. It is stronger because it is clearer, because it is rooted in experience, and because it keeps the people at the heart of every challenge front and center.

We are excited about what is ahead, and we want you to come along for the journey. In the coming months, we will be sharing updates, insights from our pilots, and stories from the communities we work with. Keep an eye on this space, there is much more to come, and we cannot wait to show you the impact we are building together.

Sincerely,

Peter Choi
